There are various instances in the story which are the true evidence of the fact that the old farmer is a kind person. In the first paragraph we come to know that both the old farmer and his wife cherished the dog like own baby. They would feed the dog small pieces of fish, even with their own chopsticks. To lead the farmer to the hidden gold, the dog came running to the farmer and placing its paws against his legs, with his head it continuously remarking to a spot behind him. Answer :

The spirit of the dog came in the dream of farmer and told him to cut off pine tree. Also instructed him to make a mortar and a hand-mill with that, when the farmer, followed his instructions, he got heaps of gold. In this way the spirit of the dog helped the farmer first.

(3) – (ii) How did it help him next?

Answer :

When the dog’s spirit came in his dream again for the second time, it instructed the old man to gather the ashes of the mortar and the mill from the wicked couple and spatter it in the withered trees, so that the trees will bloom again. Accordingly, the farmer did this and sprinkled some ashes on the bare cherry tree in front of their daimio, it blossomed again. Also he was awarded with plentiful gifts.

(4) Why did the daimio reward the farmer but punish his neighbour for the same act?

Answer :

The daimio rewarded the old farmer but punished his neighbour for the same act. Because when the farmer had sprinkled the ashes on the withered tree, in a trice it bloomed. Seeing the miracle the daimio became very fascinated and he also rewarded the farmer. But when the wicked neighbour threw ashes on a bare tree, nothing changed in the tree. Rather its fine particles inserted the noses and eyes of the daimio and his wife because of the blowing wind and they began to sneeze and choke. This messed the whole procession and made the Daimio angry. That is why the neighbour was punished harshly.

Answer :

I remember a very common story of a greedy farmer. He was very poor and lived with his family. He had many ducks. One day, he was gifted a goose which was really a magical one. The goose laid one golden egg everyday and the farmer sold them in the market and became very rich. Then suddenly one day a very wicked thought lurked in his mind. The thought there might be many golden eggs inside the goose and if he cut it open he might became more rich within a single day. Then he killed the goose with a knife and saw that there’s no egg inside its belly. Due to his excessive greed he not only lost his goose but also the golden eggs.
