  • Working with the Text : 

Answer the following questions.

(1) What was the author’s opinion about Mr. Gessler as a bootmaker?

Answer : 

Mr. Gessler and his excellent work made an great impression on the author. The boots made by Mr. Gessler are well fitted to the customers. The boots were made only on order. The boots were very long lasted and made with best material. Mr. Gessler as a boot maker impressed the author very much.

(2) Why did the author visit the shop so infrequently?

Answer : 

The author visited the shop of Mr. Gessler so infrequently because the boots he bought from their shop and which were made by them, lasted so long as these had the best material.

(3) What was the effect on Mr Gessler of the author’s remark about a certain pair of boots?

Answer : 

The author’s remark about a certain pair of boots left a shocking effect on Mr. Gessler. At first, he did not believe this and perhaps wanted the author to withdraw his words. Then he argued that the author had may be got them wet and asked him to bring the shoes back to him, in order that he will repair the boots or rectify the money of boots in the bills.

(4) What was Mr Gessler’s complaint against “big firms”?

Answer : 

Mr. Gessler complained that the big firms attracted the customers through good advertisements and made lots of money and this was not because of their great works but of their artificial advertisements. And because of them day by day the condition of small traders became more difficult and they had suffered through a great loss.

(5) Why did the author order so many pairs of boots? Did he really need them?

Answer : 

No, the author did not really need them. The author felt very pity for Mr. Gessler after hearing the poor condition of him. So, the author wanted to support him financially and that is why he ordered so many pairs of boots.

  • Speaking :

(1) Do you think Mr. Gessler was a failure as a bootmaker or as a competitive businessman?

Answer : 

Mr. Gessler undoubtedly was a successful boot maker, as his customers were satisfied with his works. They had very good materials and were lasted for long and fitted well. But he was a failure as a competitive businessman. As he did not have the enough money to spend in other things like good advertisements. All the money he earned spent on the leathers and his rent. That is why he could not compete with his contemporary traders.

(2) What is the significance of the title? To whom or to what does it refer?

Answer : 

The title “Quality” refers to the high quality of the boots made by Mr. Gessler. He took much time on making the boot perfect and did not even allow anyone to touch this boots. For him, the quality of the boots were most important, so he used good materials always. Unlike his competitive businessmen he never made money just by the advertisements, and yet he went through very worse situation, he never compromised with the quality of his boots.

(4) Speak to five adults in your neighbourhood. Ask them the following questions (in any language they are comfortable in). Then come back and share your findings with the class.

(i) Do they buy their provisions packed in plastic packets at a big store, or loose, from a smaller store near their house?

Answer : 

Most of them buy their daily provisions loose, from a smaller store near their house, that is really unhealthy.

(ii) Where do they buy their footwear? Do they buy branded footwear, or footwear made locally? What reasons do they have for their preference?

Answer : 

They buy their footwear from a local store. Four of them usually buy branded footwear. As they works in various big companies, they prefer the branded footwear. But one of them prefers the local footwear because branded shoes are usually really expensive.

(iii) Do they buy ready-made clothes, or buy cloth and get their clothes stitched by a tailor? Which do they think is better?

Answer : 

They do both, buy ready-made clothes and the clothes that stitched by a tailor. Most of them think that buy ready-made clothes is easier and they can get latest fashioned clothes from the shops.
