Working with the Text :

Answer the following questions. 

(1) Why did the king want no more talk about the hilsa-fish?

Answer : 

The king wanted no more talk about the hilsa-fish because everyone of his kingdom was continuously talking about the same topic ‘hilsa-fish’. This made him very enraged and he become irritated of this.

(2) What did the king ask Gopal to do to prove that he was clever?

Answer : 

The king asked Gopal to do a work to prove that he was very clever. The king told him to buy a hilsa-fish from the market and gave him a condition that he had to make sure the fact that no one should talk to Gopal about the hilsa-fish, when he brought it into the palace.

(3) What three things did Gopal do before he went to buy his hilsa-fish?

Answer : 

The three ridiculous things that Gopal do before he went to buy his hilsa-fish are

  • He has shaved his half face.
  • Smeared himself with ash.
  • He wore rugs.

(4) How did Gopal get inside the palace to see the king after he had bought the fish?

Answer : 

When Gopal wanted to enter the palace with his hilsa-fish, he was impeded by the guards. Then he began to sing and dance very loudly that made the king furious. So, the king ordered the guards to brought him into the palace, In this way Gopal get inside the palace.

(5) Explain why no one seemed to be interested in talking about the hilsa-fish which Gopal had bought.

Answer : 

When Gopal bought the Hilsa-fish from the market no one seemed to be interested in talking about those Hilsa-fish, because they were more interested in his appearance, as he put on rugs, shaved half of his face, covered his body with ash. They thought he might be get mad. Seeing his weird condition they forgot the tropic of hilsa-fish.

(6) Write ‘True’ or ‘False’ against each of the following sentences.

(i) The king lost his temper easily.

(ii) Gopal was a madman.

(iii) Gopal was a clever man.

(iv) Gopal was too poor to afford decent clothes.

(v) The king got angry when he was shown to be wrong.
