  • Working With The Poem :

(1) Answer these questions.

(i) Why does the poet want to know where the teachers go at four o’clock?

Answer : 

The poet regards the teachers as special persons and thinks that they are not similar as ordinary people. That is why he is eager to know that where the teachers go at four o’clock, after school and what they do then.

(ii) What are the things normal people do that the poet talks about?

Answer : 

The poet says that usually normal people live in their houses with their parents after returning home they wash their clothes and freshen up, wear pajamas. Then watch TV, make mistakes, They also punished, lose their hymn books, scribble on the desk tops and wear dirty old clothes etc.

(iii) What does he imagine about

(a) where teachers live?

(b) what they do at home?

(c) the people with whom they live?

(d) their activities when they were children in school?

Answer : 

(a) He imagines that the teachers whether live with their families in their homes.

(b) He thinks that if the teachers also wash their socks, wear pajamas, watch TV or pick their noses after returning home from school.

(c) He wonders whether the teachers also live with their mother and father or other family members.

(iv) Why does the poet wonder if teachers also do things that other people do?

Answer : 

The poet wonders if teachers also do things that other people do because he had always regarded them as special persons, not like an ordinary person. The author thought the teachers were strict as well as respected. They never made any mistakes and were entirely perfect.

(v) How does the poet plan to find out? What will he do once he finds out?

Answer : 

The poet plans to chase one of his teachers on his way back to home to find out what they do after returning home.

Once he finds out what they do, he would compose it into a poem, then the teachers read it out to their students.

(2) What do you think these phrases from the poem mean?

(i) punished in the corner

(ii) leave their greens

Answer : 

(i) Punished in the corner : Asked to stand in the corner in the class after getting caught for making mistakes during the class.

(ii) Leave their greens : Children’s do not ever eat the green vegetables or potherbs and always leave those unconsumed so the poet wonders if the teachers eat those green vegetables.
