Chapter 2.5 : Learn Yoga from Animals Exercise question Solutions

Question no – (1) 

Answer : 

(a) Name : Bhujangasana

Meaning in English : Cobra pose

General information : It is a beginner’s pose. Bhujanga in Sanskrit means a cobra.It resembles the posture of a cobra with raised head.

Steps and pictures :

lie face down to relax all the muscles completely for keeping body in ease.

Place the palms on the sides just below the shoulders.

Breathe in deeply while slowly rising head.

Smoothly raise the upper part of the body.

Do not come with a jerk rather keep the movement smooth and flowing.

Come up slowly to feel the movement of the spine vertebra by vertebra.

curve the spine well.

The navel must keep touching the ground.

Benefits : It helps to tone the back muscles and strengthen the spine. It is also

beneficial for the chest and shoulders.

(b) Name : Simhasana

Meaning in English : Lion pose

General information : it is a favourite pose of young people. It gets the name from the way one stick tongue out as far as possible and hold fingers splayed out resembling a roaring lion.

Steps and pictures :

Sit with folded legs so that toes are pointing straight behind and you are sitting on your heels.

Keep your spine straight but as relaxed as possible.

Close eyes and focus your attention on the centre of forehead which is referred to the third eye.

Closing your mouth touch your palette.

Take a deep breathe through nose while tongue is still touching palette.

Exhale in one strong move while sticking out tongue and opening jaws as much as possible.

Roar at the top of your voice while exhaling with haa sound.

Hold this pose for between 20 and 30 seconds.

Benefits : though the pose includes a number of steps still it requires very little effort.

(c) Name : Garudasana

Meaning in English : Eagle pose

General information : it is helpful to enhance the balance of human body.

Steps and pictures :

Stand straight on both feet. Raise the right leg and wrap it around the left leg.

The right thigh should be over the left thigh and the right feet should touch the calf muscles from behind.

Similarly, wrap the right hand around the left hand.

Now place the palms together to resemble the beak of an eagle.

Try to maintain the balance and slowly bend the left leg and lower the body until right toes touch the ground.

Benefits : besides enhancing the body’s ability of balance it is also helpful to strengthen the leg muscles. It also improves the flexibility of the joints by loosening the joint muscles.

(d) Name : Ustrasana

Meaning in English : Camel pose

General information : it is beneficial to strengthen the back, shoulders, chest and quadriceps.

Steps and pictures :

Kneel on the yoga mat and place hands on the hips.

Knees should be in line with the shoulders and the sole of feet should be facing the ceiling.

During inhale, draw in tail-bone towards the pubis as if being pulled from the navel.

Simultaneously, arch back and slide palms over feet till the arms are straight.

Do not strain or flex neck but keep it in a neutral position.

Stay in this posture for a couple of breathes.

Breathe out and slowly come back to the initial position. Withdraw hands and bring back to hips as straighten up.

Benefits : it strengthens back, opens chest, shoulders and quadriceps. It also boosts mood and energy. The yoga posture adds flexibility and strength to the body and helps in improving digestion.
