  • Working With The Text :

(A) Match the sentences under I with those under II

Answer :  

(1) Jumman and Algu were the best of friends – (3) In the absence of one; the other took care of his family.

(2) Jumman’s aunt transferred her property to him – (4) The condition was that he would be responsible for her welfare.

(3) The aunt decided to appeal to the Panchayat – (2) She wanted justice.

(4) Algu was unwilling to support the aunt – (5) The bond of friendship between him and Jamman was very strong.

(5) Jumman was very happy to hear Algu’s name as head Punch – (1) He believe that his friend would never go against him.

(C) Answer the following questions.

(1) “Then the situation changed.” What is being referred to?

Answer :  

The situation of the old aunt changed after she hands over her property to Jumman. Earlier Jumman looked after his aunt but after getting the property he had been changed and forgot his promise to his aunt. Then both he and his wife started to maltreated the aunt.

(2) When Jumman’s aunt realised that she was not welcome in his house, what arrangement did she suggest?

Answer :  

The aunt in the beginning endured the insult but after that she could not bear it anymore. So she decided to cook her food separately and she also claimed a monthly allowance from Jumman.

(3) What was the villagers’ reaction when the aunt explained her case to them?

Answer :  

When the old aunt explained her situation to the villagers, they gave various reactions; same of them had sympathy for her poor situation, whereas some laughed at her. Other villagers advised her to make peace with Juman as well as his wife.

(4) Why was Jumman happy over Algu’s nomination as head Panch?

Answer :  

When Algu get nominated by the aunt as a head Panch, Jumman became very happy over this decision. Because he was assured the fact that Aglu would not make any verdict against him, as they were very good friends.

(5) “God lives in the herart of the Panch,” the aunt said. What did she mean?

Answer :  

By this statement she meant that the person, acquired the seat of a Panch, is almost equal to gd. Like a god, a Panch also made fair decisions and he should be unbiased.

(6) What was Algu’s verdict as head Panch? How did Jumman take it?

Answer :  

After hearing the case carefully, Algu made a fair decision that has shocked Jumman. Algu told Jumman that he must gave his aunt a monthly allowance otherwise he have to gave her property back to her again. This judgment made Jumman very angry at him. Then he wanted to take a revenge from Algu as he considered Algu as an enemy after the judgment.

OR,

As a head Panch Jumman’s verdict was that, Sahu had to pay the money for the bullock to Algu. As the bullock was healthy and hearty, when he purchased it from Algu, Algu became so happy with the verdict that he cried aloud that it was the triumph of the Panchayat.

(7) Algu found himself in a tight spot. What was his problem?

Answer :  

Algu found himself in a tight spot because once Algu had sold one of his bullock to Samjhu Sahu, a cart man of his village, and he was promised that he would be paid in a month for the bullock. But after that, within a month the bullock died because of over working, so, Sahu refused to pay for the bullock.

(8) Why was Algu upset over Jumman’s nomination as head Panch?

Answer :  

Algu was upset over Jumman’s nomination as head Panch because he thought as Jumman had the power, he would certainly take the revenge of the earlier, judgment gave by him.

(9) What was Jumman’s verdict as head Panch? How did Algu take it?

Answer :  

After hearing the case carefully, Algu made a fair decision that has shocked Jumman. Algu told Jumman that he must gave his aunt a monthly allowance otherwise he have to gave her property back to her again. This judgment made Jumman very angry at him. (10) Which of the following sums up the story best?

(iii) “The voice of the Panch is the voice of God.” Give a reason for your choice.

Answer :  

I think the statement, “Let no one deviate from the path of justice and truth for friendship or enmity” sums up the story best. Because the person seated as a panch, should always be unbiased and fair to everyone. Likewise, Jumman and Algu was also unbiased and gave fair verdicts as well justice.

The opposite meanings of the followings are –
