Beauty Exercise question Solutions :

  • Working With The Poem :

(1) The poet says, “Beauty is heard in …”

Can you hear beauty? Add a sound that you think is beautiful to the sounds the poet thinks are beautiful.

The poet, Keats, said :

Heard melodies are sweet,

But those unheard are sweeter.

What do you think this means? Have you ever ‘heard’ a song in your head, long after the song was sung or played?

Answer :

Yes, we can hear the beautiful sounds of various things of nature. The sound of falling raindrops is very beautiful.

The above line refers that our imagination can be more beautiful and more effective than the reality. We really enjoy the melodies which are being played at the very moment and we find those melodies very sweet. After that, whenever we remember those melodies and the lyrics, they seem very sweeter to us. Because when we hear the melodies in our heads we can feel its real beauty more.

Yes, I have heard songs in my head, long after the song was sung or played.

(2) Read the first and second stanzas of the poem again. Note the following phrases.

corn growing, people working or dancing, wind sighing, rain falling, a singer chanting.

These could be written as

  • corn that is growing
  • people who are working or dancing

Can you rewrite the other phrases like this? Why do you think the poet uses the shorter phrases?

Answer :

Wind sighing – wind that is sighing.

Rain falling-rain that is falling

A singer chanting – a singer who is chanting.

The poet uses the shorter phrases to give the poem a beautiful rhyming sound and maintain its metrical translation.

(4) Write a paragraph about beauty. Use your own ideas along with the ideas in the poem. You may discuss your ideas with your partner.

Answer :

Beauty is something that is existent in every object of nature. Everything has their own kind of beauty the plants, humans, rivers, mountains, trees, animals, birds etc. According to me the inner beauty of someone is more significant than the beauty. Beauty depends how we perceive it.
