Composition of matter Exercise question Solutions :

Question no – (1)

Answer :

(a) The intermolecular force is Maximum in the particles of solid.

(b) Solids retain their volume even when external pressure is applied. This property is called Incompressibility.

(c) Matter is classified into the types mixture, compound and element, by applying the criterion Chemical composition of matter.

(d) Matter that contain two or more constituent substances is called Mixture.

(e) Milk is an example of type of matter called Heterogeneous mixture.

(f) Water, mercury and bromine are similar to each other, because three are liquids

(g) Valency of carbon is 4 and that of oxygen is 2. from this, we understand that there are 2 chemical bond/bonds between the carbon atom and one oxygen atom in the compound-carbon dioxide.

Question no – (2)

Answer :

(a) Here the odd one is – Brass

Because, apart from brass all other are elements.

(b) Here the odd one is – Hydrogen

Because, apart from hydrogen all other are compounds.

(c) Here, the odd one is – Carbon

Because, apart from carbon all other are mixtures

(d) Here the odd one is – Petrol

Because, apart from Petrol all other are inorganic compounds.

(e) Here the odd one is – Blue vitriol

Because, apart from blue vitriol all other are solutes.

(f) Here the odd one is – Hydrogen

Because, apart from hydrogen all other are solids.

Question no – (3)

Answer :

(b) In the sample the ingredient with higher percent that is copper is the solvent, zinc is the solute and brass is the solution.

(c) The two properties of mixtures from the given information are –

  • The proportion of constituents substances in a mixture varies.
  • The constituents substances in a mixture retain their properties.

Question no – (4)

Answer :

(a) Bromine and Mercury are two examples of liquid elements.

(b) Hydrogen and oxygen are two examples of gaseous element.

(c) Sodium and Potassium are two examples of Solid element.
