  • Comprehension Check (I) : 

(1) Why did the man stare at Bepin Babu in disbelief?

Answer :  

The man stare at Bepin babu in disbelief because he was not recognised by Bepin babu through they have met in Ranchi and met every day for a whole weak. The man tried to remind him all these. But later he understood that Bepin babu had a memory lapse.

(2) Where did Bepin Babu say he went in October ’58?

Answer : 

Bepin babu said he went in Kanpur with his friend in 58 to spent Puja.

(3) Mention any three (or more) things that Parimal Ghose knew about Bepin Babu.

Answer : 

Parimal Ghose knew a few things about Bepin babu, these are –

(i) Bepin Babu had a fall in Hudroo and injured his right knee.

(ii) He stayed in a bungalow at Ranchi and he did not like the hotel food and he preferred to have his meals cooked by a bawarchi.

(iii) He always carried a bag, full of his books on his sight-seeing trips.

(iv) He did not have any children and had lost his wife ten years ago and only brother had died insane.

  • Comprehension Check (II) :  

(1) Why did Bepin Babu worry about what Parimal Ghose had said?

Answer : 

Bepin babu was worried about what Parimal Ghose had said to him because the man seemed to know many intimate facts about him. He knew about the bag of books, about his wife’s death, his brother’s insanity and many more. After hearing lots of his personal details from Parimal Ghose, Bepin babu could not say with conviction that he was making a mistake or deliberately telling a lie about his visit to Ranchi.

(2) How did he try to decide who was right – his memory or Parimal Ghose?

Answer : 

After his meeting with Parimal Ghose, Bepin babu became: Very worried. Then he tried to decide whether his memory was right or Parimal Ghose. Then he took a look at his right knee and the mark of an old cut and could not recall the reason of this injury. Then he decide to ask Dinesh Mukerji, who was with him in Ranchi, according to Parimal Ghose. He thought this is the only way to clear all his doubts and confusions regarding the Ranchi trip.

(3) Why did Bepin Babu hesitate to visit Mr Mukerji? Why did he finally decide to phone him?

Answer :  

Bepin babu hesitated to visit Mr. Mukherji because he thought that if the whole incident about Ranchi trip was false, then Mr. Mukherji for sure would think that he had gone mad. He was quite afraid of Mr. Mukherji’s ruthless sarcasm: But the encounter with Parimal Ghose troubled him more and more every passing hour, and he had no other choice expect Mr. Mukherji to solve the puzzles that working in his mind. So, finally he decided to phone him to avoid the embarrassment right on his face.

(4) What did Mr Mukerji say? Did it comfort Bepin Babu, or add to his worries?

Answer :

When Bepin babu asked Mr. Mukherji about the incidents, that took place in ’58, Mr. Mukherji checked his diary and confirmed that both of them went to Ranchi in 1958, October. After hearing this Bepin babu became more confused and more puzzled and could not figure out the reason of his oblivion about this trip. So, he has lost his appetite.

  • Comprehension Check (III) : 

(1) Who was Chunilal? What did he want from Bepin Babu?

Answer : 

Chunilal was a schoolmate of Bepin babu who had been a rough time lately and had been coming to see him about a job. But Bepin babu knew that he could not do any help to him. Nevertheless, Chuni kept turning up like a bad penny.

(2) Why was Dr Chanda puzzled? What was unusual about Bepin Babu’s loss of memory?

Answer :  

Dr. Chanda become puzzled while he came to know about the symptoms of Bepin babu, as he have never had to deal with such a case. He said to Bepin babu that his complex medical condition is quite outside his field of experience. So, Dr Chanda suggested him to visit Ranchi for they may recall something about those forgotten days. The unusual matter everything regarding of his past, except for his Ranchi trip in 1958.

  • Comprehension Check (IV) :  

(1) Had Bepin Babu really lost his memory and forgotten all about a trip to Ranchi?

Answer :  

No, Bepin babu had not really lost his memory and forgotten all about a tip to Ranchi. It was all a trick, played by chunilal on Bepin babu, who refused to help him to get a job. And it was evident from the letter that was sent by chunilal to Bepin babu.

(2) Why do you think Chunilal did what he did? Chunilal says he has no money; what is it that he does have?

Answer :

Chunilal had played these tricks with Bepin babu because once he had been seeking a job to him, but he never helped chunilal. So, he decided to punish him by this brain game. Chunilal might not have money but he has a remarkable wit and a strong imaginative power, that helps him to fight against the odds. Hence, he wrote the novel being considered by a publisher.

  • Working with the Text :

(1) The author describes Bepin Babu as a serious and hardworking man. What evidence can you find in the story to support this?

Answer : 

The author describes Bepin babu as a serious and hardworking man. He worked daily in his office. It was big firm. He was doing a very responsible job. In his office he had a reputation for being a tireless and conscientious worker. It was evident in his choice of books of crime stories, thrillers etc. That he was a very serious man and did not like spending time in idle chat.

(2) Why did Bepin Babu change his mind about meeting Chunilal? What was the result of this meeting?

Answer :  

Bepin babu first refused to meet chunilal as he changed his mind for what he come. But later he changed his mind and decided to meet chunilal. He thought chunilal might remember something about his visit to Ranchi in 1958, since he had a good memory. When chunilal confirmed about Bepin Babu’s Ranchi trip, he became more puzzled and confused.

(3) Bepin Babu lost consciousness at Hudroo Falls. What do you think was the reason for this?

Answer :  

Bepin Babu lost consciousness at Hudroo falls, when he felt it was the last place of his hope that would help him to recollect all the memories of his Ranchi trip in 1958. But he could not recall any incident regarding the place and then felt down beside a boulder near Hudroo falls.

(4) How do you think Bepin Babu reacted when he found out that Chunilal had tricked him?

Answer :  

When Bepin Babu found out the fact that he was tricked by chunilal he would have felt very guilty and bad, as he had refused to help. He might be regretful. He found himself as a victim of oblivious minded as he had forgotten the genuine meaning of friendship. Through this trick he had realised a lesson.
