Answer :
An artisan is a skilled manual craftsman who creates various decorative or functional items. The artisans suffered because they were facing a huge economic loss due to the reason that the British were leaving a very high tax from them.

Answer the following questions.
(1) Do you think the Indian princes were short-sighted in their approach to the events of 1757?
Answer :
Yes, the Indian princes were short-sighted in their approach to the events of 1757. They blindly trusted the British because they helped them to win small batter-against other princess. They did not understand their bad intensions and were killed or dethroned the kings one by one.
(2) How did the East India Company subdue the Indian princes?
Answer :
During the 17th century India’s princess were constantly involved at wars. And due to such constant fights the people had no peace, So they called the English merchants to help them to defeat other kings. By helping them in such small fights the British wanted to get their trust on them. And this rivalries helped the East India to subdue the Indian princes one by one.
(3) Quote the words used by Ram Mohan Roy to say that every religion teaches the same principles.
Answer :
The following words said by ram Mohan Roy to his wife Uma conveys the same meaning – “Cows are of different colours, but the colour of their milk is the same. Different teachers have different opinions but the essence of every religion is the same.”
(4) In what ways did the British officers exploit Indians?
Answer :
The British officers exploited Indians in several ways. They imputed high taxes on the ploughers and forced them to abandon their fields. The British officers completely ruined the expert artisans and their business. To earn more profits, they reduced the import duty on goods manufactured in England when brought to India. Later in 1818, they had passed regulation III, according to this an Indian could be jailed without trial a court. They drew big salaries in India and made fortunes in private business. The British prospered on the company’s loot while Indian Industries began to die.

The expert artisans and their business were ruined by the British policies. Besides, British policies imposed heavy taxes on peasants and forced them to abandon their fields.
(iv) Four reasons for the discontent that led to the 1857 War of Independence.

(i) In Bengal, the Santhals had lost their lands due to the new land rules, so they become very desperate and rose in rebellion. They massacred the Europeans and their all supporters.
(ii) The Indian sepoys of the East India Company become very discontented as the white soldiers got huge pay and mansions to live in, along with servants, while on the other hand, they got pittance and slow promotions.
(iii) They proud Brahmin soldiers were violent, when they came to know the fact that the grease on the bullet, which they had to bite, was made from the fat of cows and pigs.
(iv) Many landlords were sore, because they had lost their lands due to the British policies.
