Working with the Text :

(1) Discuss with your partner the following definition of a poem.

A poem is made of words arranged in a beautiful order. These words, when read aloud with feeling, have a music and meaning of their own.

Answer : 

A poem is supposedly an artistic piece, arrange best words in a musical order. It contains a speech, expressed by the poet, which is usually metaphorical and rhythmical. This beautiful arrangement of words enhance the meaning of the poem. The rhyming words carry several ideas and portrays the imaginations of the poet. Poems are read aloud to feel the emotion and intense passion of it.

(2) ‘The poetry of earth’ is not made of words. What is it made of, as suggested in the poem?

Answer :  

“The poetry of earth” is nit made of words but it is made of the beautiful songs that are created by nature’s several creatures it is made of tireless hopping of the grasshopper and the cricket’s singing in a shrill voice. They sing joyfully without any interruption.

(3) Find in the poem lines that match the following.

(i) The grasshopper’s happiness never comes to an end.

Answer :  

In summer luxury he has never done with his delights.

(ii) The cricket’s song has a warmth that never decreases

Answer :  

The cricket’s song, in warmth increasing ever.

(4) Which word in stanza 2 is opposite in meaning to ‘the frost’?

Answer :  

In stanza 2, the word that is opposite in meaning to ‘the frost’ is ‘warmth’. ‘Frost’ is the word that is evidence of cold experience, while the word ‘warmth’ indicates the cricket’s song in a shrill voice that raises warm feeling.

(5) The poetry of earth continues round the year through a cycle of two seasons. Mention each with its representative voice.

Answer :  

The poetry of earth continues round the year through a cycle of summer and winter. The grasshopper hops with delight tirelessly. During the summer, the birds and the grasshoppers takes the lead. While in a lone winter evening when the frost forms a silence, the cricket sing in a shrill voice from the stone.
