Exogenetic Processes Part-1 Exercise question Solutions :

Question no – (1)

(a) What is mechanical weathering ?

Answer :

Mechanical weathering : Breaking down of rocks or components in the earth’s crust through the measures of physical forces is called mechanical weathering.

(b) What are the main types of chemical weathering?

Answer :

The main types of chemical weathering are :

  • Carbonation,
  • Solution,
  • Oxidation.

(c) How does biological weathering occur?

Answer :

Biological weathering occurs because of living organisms.

(d) Distinguish between weathering and mass wasting.

Answer :

Difference between the weathering and mass wasting are as follows :

  • Weathering :

Breaking or weakening of rock is a natural phenomenon it is called weathering.

There are three types of weathering- mechanical, chemical and biological.

  • Mass Wasting :

When weathered particles move down due to gravity alone the process is called mass movements or mass wasting.

But mass twisting is of two types repeat and slow.

Question no – (2)

(a) Climate affects earthquakes

Answer :

= This statement is False.

= Correction : The activities of the earth’s tectonic plates affects earthquakes.

(b) Mechanical weathering is less effective in humid climates.

Answer :

= This statement is True

(c) Mechanical weathering happens on a large scale in dry climates.

= This statement is True.

Answer :

(d) The breaking down of rocks into smaller particles is called weathering.

= This statement is True.

Answer :

(e) Lateritic rocks are formed through exfoliation.

Answer :

= This statement is False.

= Correction : For the activity of chemical weathering lateritic rocks are formed.

Question no – (3)

Answer :

Weathering process :

(i) Mechanical weathering :

  • Block Disintegration,
  • Exfoliation.

(ii) Chemical weathering :

  • Carbonation,
  • Solution,
  • Oxidation.

(iii) Biological weathering :

  • Burrowing by animals,
  • Algae, mosses and lichens.

Question no – (4)

Answer :

(a) Some animals live inside the grounds by making burrows.

= Biological weathering.

(b) The rock rusts.

= Oxidation.

(c) Water which has accumulated in the crevices of the rocks freezes. Consequently, the rock breaks.

= Action of frost.

(d) The pipes supplying water in colder regions break.

= Mechanical weathering.

(e) Sand formation occurs in deserts.

= Mechanical weathering.
