Answer :

Question no – (3) 

Answer : 

Main characters :

Sue, Johnsy, the doctor and Mr. Behrman.

Problem :

Johnsy was going through a stiff disease, pneumonia, and was about to die almost.

Attempts made to solve it :

Sue spoke to her to raise her mental strength.

Climax/turning point :

As the last leaf did not fall, Johnsy realised that she was wrong and wicked to want to be died.

Problem solved :

After many attempts finally Johnsy removed the thought of her dying from her mind and become normal.

End :

To help Johnsy to live Mr. Behrman painted the last ivy vine leaf on the wall and got wet, and then died of pneumonia. The man had saved the life of Johnsy by giving up his own life.

Answer :  

(a) The ivy vine :

It is a strong creeper that has green leaves and yellow berries on it. Its gnarled and decayed roots grow up through the walls. Most of the leaves of this creeper had fallen because of the autumn’s cold breath, and there were only bare branches left.

(b) Behrman :

Behrman, who lived on the ground floor was a painter. But he did not gain much fame in this genre. He had struggled for 40 years but did not earn much money. He always wanted to make a masterpiece but had only few common paintings. He was a very generous and kind hearted person and finally he made a masterpiece, a last, on the wall that had gifted a life to Johnsy, but had taken his own life.

(c) The last leaf that Johnsy saw :

Johnsy already made her mind that she was going die when the last leaf of the ivy vine would be dropped. But the next day she saw the leaf had not fallen, so she realised that she was wrong and decided to remove the thought of dying from her mind. But actually the last leaf of the ivy vine had fallen due to the heavy rain at night and the leaf that Johnsy saw, was the master- piece of Mr. Behrman who painted it after the last leaf had fallen. He had made it just to save ones life.
