(a) Cultures which prospered in the New Stone Age were mainly dependent on an agricultural form of life. Fertile soil and continuous water supply are necessary for raising good quality of crops. Consistently, in the New Stone Age people established their village settlements on the banks of rivers. The culture in the New Stone Age prospered along the banks of rivers.
(b) Harappan craftsmen were greatly skilled at making bronze items and beads from semi-precious stones of several colours. In Mesopotamia, these articles occupied a prominent place and were in huge demand.

(a) Characteristics of Harappan cities :
Cities of this civilization are famous for their systematized town planning. The houses were constructed in blocks which were constituted by parallel roads that crossed one another at right angles. Huge granaries and spacious houses depicted the significant characteristics of these cities. In every house there were bathrooms and latrines and a covered drainage system which displayed the growing concernment for public hygiene. The private and public wells were carefully established. The cities were splitted into two to four portions, each bearing a distinct fortification.
(b) In the North of Africa, the river Nile flows through the eastern part of the Sahara desert. One of the most ancient civilizations prospered along the banks of the Nile river. This is termed as the ‘Egyptian Civilization’. Each year, the Nile river gets flooded. Due to the flood deposits, the land along her banks has turned out to be extremely fertile. Furthermore, small embankments were constructed on the river in order to store the flood water. After the settlement of the soil at the bottom of the flood water, the water was used for irrigational purposes.
