European Museums had large collections of pre-historic artifacts and archaic objects. Christian Thomsen was a scholar who had introduced the ‘Three Age System’ for classifying these objects. Thomsen categorized the objects into three following sequence :

(1) Stone tools → Stone Age

(2) Copper tools and articles → Copper Age

(3) Iron tools and articles → Iron Age

Consequently, these three periods were termed as Stone Age, Copper Age and Iron Age. Basically, gold was the first metal that was used. Gold is so soft, that it could not be used for making tools and implements. Copper was another metal that was discovered by the humans for making tools and implements and this has resulted in the emergence of the Copper Age.

(b) Social organization in the ancient cities :

The increase in trade has been considered to be one of the main factor that is responsible for the emergence and growth of cities. The cultural roots of cities could be traced in the culture of village settlements of the New Stone Age. The earlier faith system, social life and festivals became more elaborate in cities that had flourished due to the increase in trade. There were construction of Grand temples in several cities. Chiefs of these temples became the chief administrators of these cities. Later, the positions of temple head and Kings were retained by the same person. This resulted in the commencement of the ancient urban civilization of the world.
