(2) State whether the following statements are true or false:

(i) A cylindrical magnet has only one pole.

This is False.

Because each magnet has two pole positive and negative poles.

(ii) Artificial magnets were discovered in Greece.

This is False.

Because magnet has been discovered in magnesia and artificial magnets are made in Greece.

(iii) Similar poles of a magnet repel each other.

Above statement is True

(iv) Maximum iron filings stick in the middle of a bar magnet when it is brought near them.

This is False.

Because, The iron fillings stick to the end of the bar magnet when they are bought close to it to the positive end and negative end.

(3) It was observed that a pencil sharpener gets attracted by both the poles of a magnet although its body is made of plastic. Name a material that might have been used to make some part of it.

The pencil sharpener is attracted towards magnet because the iron is the material used to make the blade used in sharpener to sharp the pencil and iron is a magnetic material which has property to attract towards the magnet.

(5) Write any two properties of a magnet.

It attracts some metals like iron, nickel, cobalt etc so used in big cranes to pick them up and in the factories.

It always shows north south directions so used in the compass to show the directions.

(6) Where are poles of a bar magnet located?

The poles are located on the two end of the bar magnet that is N and S the positive and negative end and as much we cut the magnet that much magnets has these ends.

(7) A bar magnet has no markings to indicate its poles. How would you find out near which end is its north pole located?

To find the North Pole we have to tie the bar magnet in center and hang it the north end shows the the North Pole and this is how the bar magnet with no marks to indicate its poles can get the poles or directions.

(8) You are given an iron strip. How will you make it into a magnet?

There are several methods of making magnets.

• Take a bar magnet and place one of its poles near one edge of the strip of iron.
• Without lifting the bar magnet, move it along the length of the iron strip till you reach the other end
• Now, lift the magnet and bring the pole to the same point of the iron strip from which you began.
• Move the magnet again along the iron strip in the same direction as you did before.
• Repeat this process about 30-40 times.

After following all the steps we get the magnet form of iron strip.
