Motions of the Earth Exercise question Solutions :

Question no – (1) 

Answer : 

Amit’s granny should visit Australia during the summer season because she is unable to endure cold weather. As Australia is located in the southern hemisphere, so it experiences summer season during the time period of 23rd September to 22nd March. So, by taking this into account, they should arrange the trip to Australia anywhere between October and mid of March.

Question no – (2) 

Answer : 

(a) It takes one day for the earth to complete one rotation. In order to complete one revolution it takes a period of three sixty five days and six hours that is 1/4 day. This clearly indicates that the earth completes 365 and 1/4 rotations during one revolution around the sun.

(b) The earth spins in the direction from west to east. This signifies that sunrise is seen earlier in the eastern states and slowly it is observed by the western states. The sequence in which the sun will rise in the mentioned cities are Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Kolkata (West Bengal), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and Mumbai (Maharashtra).

Question no – (3) 

Answer : 

(a) The motion of the earth around itself is called Rotation.

(b) The motion of the earth around the sun is called Revolution.

(c) The rotation of the earth gives rise to Day and Night.

Question no – (4) 

Answer : 

(a) Full moon :

When a round and entire illuminated portion of the Moon is visible in the sky, it is known as full moon. When the Moon is situated in the reversed side of the Earth from the sun, the full moon phase takes place and this is termed as opposition. Only at full moon, a lunar eclipse can occur.

(b) New moon :

A New moon refers to the one where we only see the side of the Moon that is not being lighted by the sun, making it invisible in the sky from the earth.

(c) Lunar month :

Lunar month refers to the period of twenty eight to thirty days between one new moon and the next new moon.

(d) Tithi :

Every single day of the lunar month is known as Tithi.

Question no – (5) 

Answer : 

(a) Equator : 

The equator refers to an imaginary line around the Earth’s surface. It is midway between the north and south poles, it would split the earth into two equivalent portions.

(b) The equator splits the earth into two equivalent portions which are known as the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere.

Explanation : The Northern Hemisphere is the half portion of the planet Earth that is between the North Pole and the equator. The Southern Hemisphere is another half portion of the Earth that is between the South Pole and the equator.
